The GMT Group in fact began life in 1981 with the incorporation of Hayling Seas Line SA and Snaddon (UK) Ltd. Following the decision to focus the business on the Asia-Africa segment in the late 1990's, the first GMT Group company, GMT Shipping Line Inc. was incorporated in January 1998.
